Career Paths and Opportunities
While the Registered Dietician (RD) traditionally works in an institutional environment, such as hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and school systems under the direction of, or in coordination with, conventional medical physicians, the Clinical Nutritionist (CN) often maintains a private nutritional counseling service or works as part of a team in an integrated medical clinic.
Those CN students who are already primary healthcare clinicians simply incorporate what they have learned into their existing practices. The CN often works in conjunction with other clinicians also dedicated to wellness care and functional medicine, such as nutritionally minded medical, chiropractic, and naturopathic physicians. The CN also has opportunities to work with nutritional supplement, nutraceutical, and clinical laboratory companies.
Graduates of a Masters program in Human Nutrition can also choose to go on to attain a Ph.D., they often become involved in academia, engage in research, become community and media experts in nutrition and wellness, and a multitude of other opportunities.
