Part-time Instructor, English Language Institute

 

 

Reporting to the Director, English Language Institute Instructors teach English as a Second Language to international students and non-English speaking local residents in an academic preparation, six level, intensive English program on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.

 

Instructors work on a part-time basis and are employed to teach for one seven-week session.  Subsequent sessions are offered based on enrollment, availability of appropriate levels, and evaluation of performance.

 

Teaching includes not only classroom contact hours, but also grading, preparation, and digitally mediated learning.  Digitally mediated learning can encompass answering student emails, maintaining course websites, or managing online discussions.

 

Instructors perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the English Language Institute and University of Bridgeport.  Instructors will remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in the field of second language instruction

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Follow established curriculum as outlined in syllabi, including assigned books; 

  • Accept assignment to teach at any level offered by the Institute;

  • Conscientiously prepare engaging and effective daily lesson plans, plan for covering outcomes during session, and correct homework, compositions, quizzes and final exams;

  • Evaluate students in a conscientious and responsible manner according to the defined criteria;

  • Inform students in writing of academic status at mid-session and submit mid-session evaluation forms for each student;

  • Complete and submit Evaluation Forms for each student by the last day of each session or when required;

  • Participate in creation of quizzes and final exams as required or requested by Director or Assistant Director;

  • Participate in book selection, outcomes evaluation and modification, evaluation criteria, or other program development tasks as requested by Director or Assistant Director;

  • Attend staff meetings once a week and In-Service meetings once a session;

  • Participate in the system of ongoing instructor evaluation and professional development as defined by Director or Assistant Director;

  • Be both highly professional and positive in all dealings with students of the Institute;

  • Respond to email or phone communication from the office or students in a timely manner, within 24 hours;

  • Other duties as may be assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus TESL certificate required;

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, TEFL or a related field preferred;

  • Previous teaching experience in intensive English program or ESL preferred.

     

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Effective use of instructional technology to include competence in the  use of email, Microsoft Word, Excel, DVD players

    • Demonstrated commitment to student success or to customer service;

    • Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse and multi-cultural population;

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
    • Superior organization, prioritization, and self-motivation skills;

    • Ability to interact effectively and  work collaboratively with colleagues;

    • Ability to listen to students and to understand and respond positively to their requests;

    • Ability to adapt to changing assignments and multiple priorities;

    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and successfully meet deadlines.
