University of Bridgeport today announced that long-time athletics administrator Anthony Vitti will return to his alma mater in early April to serve as the Purple Knights’ Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations.
A 2003 UB graduate, Vitti served as the Bridgeport Director of Athletics from July of 2014 through June of 2019. Vitti began his career at the University of Bridgeport in 2004 in a role with the Admissions Office. He transitioned to the athletic department in 2008 and held various positions, including Director of Equipment Services and Game Day Operations and Associate Athletics Director for Business and Compliance before his promotion to Director of Athletics.
UB also announced that Kate Smullen, who is currently serving as the University’s Interim Director of Athletics, will transition to a new role as Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Women’s Administrator on July 1, 2021 when Jay Moran formally begins his role as Vice President of Athletics.
Anthony’s return to UB further demonstrates the organization’s commitment to athletics as we begin a new chapter in the University of Bridgeport’s storied history,” stated Moran. “Anthony truly bleeds purple, and this campus is the place he wants to be. I am ecstatic he’s coming back to be part of our staff. I could not be happier that Kate Smullen will also remain on the team to help chart the future of UB Athletics. Her service during these trying times has been truly exemplary.”
Said Vitti, “As a former athlete and alumnus, the University of Bridgeport is very special to me – it’s home. I’d like to thank Goodwin University President, Mark Scheinberg, incoming Vice President of Athletics, Jay Moran, and Interim Director of Athletics Kate Smullen for this opportunity. I’m thrilled to be back and get to work as we move the department forward during this exciting time for the institution.”
“We are excited to welcome Anthony back to the University of Bridgeport and believe his experience and knowledge will benefit the student athletes, our coaching staff and the entire UB community,” said Dr. Stephen Healey, interim president of the University of Bridgeport. “I also couldn’t be more enthusiastic about Kate Smullen taking on her new role in the Athletics Department. Our recent hires in this area not only solidify the department, but they re-affirm our commitment to building and maintaining a winning athletics program.”
“As I said when we announced that Jay was coming back to UB a few months ago, we are committed to hiring the best talent across every discipline, including athletics,” said Mark Scheinberg, president of Goodwin University. “I am thrilled that Anthony is returning to UB and excited that Kate will remain an integral part of the team. Go Purple Knights!”
